Language Interpreting means: “To translate orally the words of another person speaking a different language”. Interpreting can be done consecutively or simultaneously. In consecutive interpreting, one person speaks and then the interpreter conveys that message to the other speaker in their language. The interpreter’s role is to facilitate communication between two parties who cannot understand each other. Simultaneous interpreting happens when someone speaks and the interpreter conveys that message to the other speaker at the same time. A good interpreter needs to have knowledge of the general subject of the speeches that are to be interpreted; an intimate familiarity with both cultures; extensive vocabulary in both languages; the ability to express thoughts clearly and concisely in both languages; excellent note-taking technique for consecutive interpreting; at least 2-3 years of interpreting experience for simultaneous interpreting.
